Nyack is a village located in the town of Orangetown in Rockland County, New York and is about 25 miles north of New York City. Nyack is a waterfront community with scenic views of the Hudson River, Tappan Zee Bridge and nearby Westchester County. The zip code of Nyack is 10960. Nyack has convenient access to Interstate 287 via exit 11. Local county routes passing through the village are route 9W and route 59.
Nyack is the most urban community of Rockland County and includes densely populated residential streets full of single/multi family homes and several waterfront apartment buildings, including luxurious units.
Nyack has the largest downtown area in Rockland County that includes multiple blocks that stretch for about a mile. Downtown Nyack is centered on Main Street and terminates at the shores of the Hudson River, and even expands to some of the surrounding streets in the north-south directions. Downtown Nyack has a Manhattan-like flavor (besides the skyscrapers) with many boutique shops, art galleries, restaurants, cafes, cultural centers, and businesses. Whether it’s a hot summer day or cool winter night, Nyack is full of people walking the streets along the tightly parallel parked cars.
Nyack is home to some of Rockland County’s best places to eat with many different restaurants serving diverse cuisines ranging from Chinese and Sushi to Italian and American food. There is a lively nightlife in Nyack with restaurants/bars such as the upscale Manhattan-like three-story Vertigo or the cool Bourbon Street. Nyack has multiple cultural events, holiday celebrations and festivals that always attract large crowds. The annual Nyack Halloween Parade attracts thousands of local residents and distant visitors competing for a grand money prize of $1,000 for best costumes.
Nyack is rich in culture and history and is home to many interesting landmarks and venues. Riverspace Arts is a major performing arts center and one of the best cultural centers in Rockland County. The Elmwood Playhouse is a great theater venue to watch spectacular plays.
Nyack was home to the prominent American realist painter Edward Hopper, who is buried in the local Oak Hill Cemetery. He leaves a legacy on the community with The Edward Hopper House Art Center, which features his works and as well as the works of local artists. Nyack was also home to the prominent actress Helen Hayes, after which the local hospital and former theater was named after. Having a close proximity to New York City, Nyack has a long history of hosting many famous people in the arts and entertainment industries.
Even among an urban setting, Nyack has areas and facilities for recreation. Nyack Memorial Park is a waterfront park with ballfield, tennis courts, basketball courts and pier with a scenic view of the Hudson River. Nyack is home to the Rockland County YMCA which offers a variety of activities and includes a fitness center and indoor swimming pool.
The nearby middle school and high school have excellent sports fields open to the public. Nyack has several marinas to accommodate its large population of boating enthusiasts who enjoy the Hudson River during the warm spring and summer seasons.
Nyack is served by the excellent Nyack Public Schools District and is home to the administration building and Nyack Middle School, with the other schools located in nearby communities. The Nyack Library provides complementary educational resources to the community. The village is also home to a campus of Nyack College, a private liberal arts college located on about 100 acres. Nyack College is affiliated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance and is home to the Alliance Theological Seminary and offers dozens of majors.
Nyack is home to Nyack Hospital, one of three main hospitals in Rockland County. Nyack Hospital mostly serves the local residents of the communities of Orangetown and provides excellent comprehensive care ranging from maternity and pediatrics to radiology and physical therapy.
